Frequently Asked questions

If you have a question that hasn't been answered here, please get in touch!

How long are counselling sessions?

Counselling sessions are 1 hour (60 minutes) and usually take place once a week.

What is an assessment period?

The assessment period covers the initial 3 sessions. The sessions function in the same way usual counselling sessions would. This period allows us to enter a no-commitment agreement while we determine if we work well together. During this time, if you feel I'm not the right counsellor for you, let me know, and we can look to find someone more suitable. Similarly, if I feel I don’t have the right skills to work with you, I'll inform you and help you find a counsellor who may be a better fit. It’s important to note that the assessment period isn’t the only opportunity you will have to let me know if you feel the sessions aren’t working for you. I will regularly check in with you to see how things are going.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes, I ask that all clients let me know if they need to cancel a session with at least 24 hours’ notice. If you cancel with less than that, or you do not attend a session, you will still be charged for that session. If you have any questions about this, please get in touch.

Do you offer concessionary rates?

Yes, I offer a 10% discount for clients who are students or work for the NHS. Please contact me if you would like to enquire about a concessionary rate.

Can I have ad-hoc sessions?

My therapeutic approach is typically long-term, weekly sessions that are in-depth and explore subconscious and underlying patterns. For therapy to be effective, it requires us to build an on-going therapeutic relationship which is usually done through weekly sessions. However, each individual case is different. If you would like to discuss whether ad-hoc sessions would be appropriate for you, please get in touch.

Do you offer assessments for ADHD/Autism?

No, ADHD or Autism assessments are typically conducted by psychiatrists or clinical psychologists. You can obtain a referral from your GP or healthcare professional. Additionally, Psychiatry UK provides assessments both privately and via the NHS 'right to choose' pathway. For details, visit https://psychiatry-uk.com/.

“I want to stress how absolutely amazing Shannon has been. She has helped me to begin my healing journey and understand why I am the way I am, and how I can progress from that, I have been very lucky!” – Anonymous, Plymouth.
